To cap off an eventful offseason and preseason, which saw Minnesota land some of the biggest names on the trade market and in free agency, the Twins made another big move, dealing Taylor Rogers, Brent Rooker, and some cash to the Padres for Chris Paddack, Emilio Pagan, and a player to be named later. Let’s break down and see how this trade aids both teams:
- What did the Padres get?
Few people would have imagined the Twins sending away their best reliever, who’s quietly been one of the best relievers in the MLB the last few seasons.
Each of the last 3 seasons, the left-hander’s K/9 has been over 10.5, with him reaching a career-high 13.2 strikeouts per 9 innings in 2021. That, combined with a BB/9 below 2 and a HR/9 below 1, led to the first All-Star appearance of his career last season. The Statcast numbers back him up and then some, as his expected ERA for 2021 was at 2.51, significantly lower than his 3.35 ERA. Padres’ fans can expect the 31-year-old to continue his success and fill in the hole left by the departure of Mark Melancon from the back of their bullpen.
The addition of Brent Rooker in the trade is interesting and seems to be nothing more than a depth move for the Padres. While he’s had success in the minors, the former college baseball star hasn’t been able to transfer that to the majors yet.

With the ending of the 99-day baseball lock-out, the Boston Red Sox are forced to answer some burning questions that have been mounting during the off-season. One of the most important questions that the organization will need to address before opening day is pitching rotation. With Eovaldi, Sale, and Pivetta seemingly being the only locks for a starting job this season, the open spots are still riddled with question marks.
