Notre Dame must persevere through the remainder of the regular season without star safety Kyle Hamilton. Irish fans may have seen him line up for the last time in a Notre Dame uniform.

No one likes to see any player suffer an injury, whether it is to a star or to a member of the scout team. But before panic breaks loose, there is a bright side to the situation.

First, the injury has opened up opportunities for DJ Brown, Ramon Henderson and Xavier Watts. Brown has stepped up to the challenge. Against Virginia, Brown and Henderson blanketed the vaunted Cavalier receivers. Watts made plays in coverage and against the run versus Navy. That was not necessarily at safety, but his enormous talent was evident. All three players have shown athleticism and coverage speed. Playing time for them now will set The Irish up for the bowl game and for next season.

For that matter, the entire Notre Dame defense has stepped up. They have yielded only nine points total, and zero touchdowns, in the last two games. Granted, that was against a sub par Navy team and a Virginia team playing without its starting quarterback.

But the numbers are impressive nonetheless. And the truth is, this is the only scenario that could result in Hamilton returning to Notre Dame next season. Sure, he will have a chance to display his talents in workouts for scouts. But he will not be able to erase all doubt in the minds of scouts that he is completely recovered. And there will always be doubt as to whether he can stay healthy. Doubt like that could see him slip in draft position and cost him money.

There is only one way that Hamilton can erase that doubt. That is by returning to Notre Dame next season, playing the entire year, and putting up the overall tackle and interception numbers that turn potential into proof. Getting passed Georgia Tech and Stanford without him may not pose a challenge. But if The Irish make it to The College Playoff, Hamilton’s return would be a big difference maker. Playoff games would give him a chance to display his recovery. It would be great if he gets that chance.
